Ihave a 160mm wrist and got the small which is right on the edge. I still have 8 or so loops left to make it larger. The only difficulty you might face is getting larger hands through the loop to put it on but if you'r in between definitely size down versus up. I have a 155mm wrist and I got the size S.

Youwon't catch Apple saying this, but the Modern Buckle is heavily implied to be for women. It only works with the 38 mm Watch and in all the promotional materials and videos the Modern Buckle is worn exclusively by women. The "male" counterpart being the Leather Loop which only comes in 42 mm.
Its really a matter of personal preference. While my wrist size is ~175mm, I'll often wear a ~45mm watch, and I think it looks fine (I think a watch would have to be ~48-50mm before it gets too big for me). However, that's a personal preference. Lots of people also prefer smaller watches, like 36-38mm.
